Guanacaste has a dry tropical climate. The dry season (mid-November to April) offers abundant sunshine, perfect for beach activities and exploring. The green season (May to early November) brings lush landscapes and occasional afternoon rains, often followed by clear skies.
A 'soda' is a small, typically family-run restaurant serving traditional Costa Rican cuisine at affordable prices. They are fantastic places to experience authentic local food like 'casados' and 'gallo pinto' in a casual setting.
While public buses connect major towns, renting a car (preferably a 4x4 for some roads) offers the most flexibility to explore Guanacaste's diverse attractions, especially if you plan to visit national parks or more secluded beaches. Taxis and ride-sharing apps are also available in popular tourist areas.
The local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC). US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you'll often get a better exchange rate paying in Colones, especially at smaller local establishments. ATMs are readily available in towns, and credit cards are accepted in most hotels and larger restaurants.
